Saturday, May 26
After working on our sustainable energy project until late Friday night, we woke up early Saturday morning to head to Mackenzie University. There, we met with our Brazilian partners, and presented our findings to Professor Pflueger, the director of Campus Brazil, and someone from ICLEI, a sustainable city research group. Our presentation went well, and our solutions were very similar to some of the ones that other groups came up with. After 4 long hours of presentations, we were done and headed out for lunch. I went out with Eduardo, from my group, Luis, another Brazilian, and some of the other students.
We headed back to Villa Madalena, where our hostels are. At 2 in the afternoon, the neighborhood was filled with people walking around, eating, and drinking at open-air restaurants. We plopped ourselves at a table outside of a restaurant with live samba music. The music set a perfect background for us to sit and enjoy the day. We ordered a round of beers, then another, then our food came out. The Brazilians ordered us a typical meal of feijoada (bean stew with pork), rice, collard greens, pork chops, and fried crackling. We feasted, sharing from family style platters until we were stuffed. We had a round of beers, then some caiparinha (sugar cane liquor mixed with lime juice), then another round of beers.
Satisfied with our meal, we walked a block down the street and met up with some other students who were watching the Champion's League game at a bar. We hung out on the street, peering inside to watch the game on some small flat screens. It was super fun and we could hear people at the bar across the street cheering for the game, catching the action a few seconds before it came on our screen.
By the time the game ended, we were all beat and parted ways with the Brazilians before going down for a nap. I woke up to grab dinner at a burger joint. The triple bacon cheeseburger I had was definitely one of the greasiest, most delicious burgers I've eaten. After the meal, we headed back to the hostel to get ready before heading out to a club for our last night in the city.
