After hearing about Liters of Light yesterday, this morning we traveled to their headquarters to help construct hand lights. When we got there, there were about a dozen volunteers to help us and interact with. They recapped some of the information from the previous day, then talked about the project we were working on. They are currently planning to provide over 600 lights to riverine communities in the Amazon. They're planning to travel there in August.

We broke off into pairs, then worked to construct 15 lights. First we assembled the electronics, wiring and soldering. Then we took a coffee break, and they provided us with some delicious Brazilian treats. We had pastels (pastries with fried meat), pao de queijo (stuffed cheesy bites), and coxinha (fried chicken croquettes).

We got the chance to chat with some of the volunteers, and also drank some delicious fruit juices. Everyone wanted to stay out in the sun and enjoy the good food and company, but we headed back to finish off our lights. They are made out of PVC piping, with LED lights covered by a water bottle bottom. When we finished, we got to test them! They turned on, then we checked to see if they would charge properly when connected to a solar panel. Success!

We headed back to the hostel, where I crashed for a two hour nap. I woke up, played a little basketball, then got some delicious Italian food with some people. I had delicious grilled salmon and risotto with capers. Sticking to the Italian theme, afterwards we headed to a gelato place. I had a fantastic trio of hazelnut, triple chocolate, and caramel cookie. I couldn't help but fantasize to a year prior, when I was eating gelato in Sardinia... The Brazilians do a pretty good job of it though. Walking back, everyone was bundled up in jackets and wearing beanies to fend off the frigid weather. How cold was it, you ask? A nippy 60 degrees. For Bostonians, this is T-shirt weather.
